Palakkad is a land of palm trees and paddy fields. It’s known to be rich in flora and fauna.Palakkad is prime among Kerala’s most picturesque districts, thanks to its distinctive palmyra trees and extensive green paddy fields. The abundant forest wealth,dams,wild life sanctuaries,rivers,rare birds and animals, historical monuments,traditional ayurvedic treatment centres have given Palakkad an exquisite and outstanding touch.

#Palakkad Fort
Palakkad Fort, also known as Tipu’s Fort among the natives, was constructed by Haider Ali in 1766. This old granite fort located near the centre of Palakkad Town is presently operational as a Taluk Office. The fort is spread over an area of around 60702.84 sq m and is known for its architecture that displays the workmanship of French engineers.
The large ground between the fort and the Palakkad Town Hall, popularly known as the Kota Maidanam, served as a stable for elephants and horses of Tipu Sultan’s army. The garden is presently used for hosting exhibitions, public meetings, competitions and cricket matches. The Rappadi or the open air auditorium in the fort has been preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
This square shaped fort is supported by walls and bastions that are located in the four corners. Earlier a draw bridge was used as the main entrance for the fort. This draw bridge has now been replaced by a strong and permanent bridge. The fort also houses a Hanuman Temple, a sub-jail and a martyr’s column. The Jainmedu Temple, Kumarapuram Temple, Manapullivaku and Vadakkanthara Temple lie in the vicinity of the fort.

#Silent Valley National Park
Silent Valley National Park is situated in the Kundali Hills, along the Western Ghats. This park is surrounded by the Nilgiri Forests in the north and Nilambur Forests in the south. The Palghat Forests and Attappadi Reserve Forests are located on the western and eastern side of the park, respectively.Environmentalists protested on a wide scale and it led to the re-notification of the Silent Valley. Afterwards, it was raised to the status of a National Park in 1984. Later in 1986, the park was included in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve as its core area.
This national park is home to 34 species of mammals, more than 150 species of birds and about 200 species of butterflies. Around 1000 species of flowering plants are found in the park, out of which, about 110 species belong to the family of orchids. Over 400 species of moths and 128 species of beetles can be spotted in the forest area.

#Fantansy Park
Fantasy Park, located around 6 km away from Palakkad, is the first amusement park of Kerala. Spread over an area of around 60702.84 sq m, the park is divided into three main areas namely the dry park, the wet park and the planetarium. Situated in the vicinity of Malampuzha, the park serves as an ideal weekend getaway and picnic spot.

The Baby Train Ride, Battery Car Ride and Water Kiddy Ride are some of the rides popular among children. The Oriental Express Train, Go Cart and Pirate Boat can be enjoyed by the whole family. The wet park has the Wave Pool, Malampuzha Falls and Water Blasters rides.The park has recently introduced a digital planetarium as an additional attraction. The main objective behind introduction of this planetarium is to encourage children to think and discuss about astronomy. This planetarium is based on concepts related to space, space exploration and space technology.

#Jain Temple
The temple is segmented into four divisions, out of which the first division has the idol of Chandranthan. The deities of Vijayalakshmi and Jwala Mohini are enshrined in the second division and the idol of Rishabha Nathan is kept in the third chamber of the shrine. Parshvanath and Padmavathi idols are enshrined in the fourth segment of this temple. It is believed that the main altar of the temple was once home to a community of 400 Jain families.Kumaran Asan, a popular poet, wrote a poem Veena Poovu or the Fallen Flower, at the site. The Thiruvegappura Sankaranarayana Temple lies in the vicinity of the Jain Temple and is believed to have been constructed around the 14th century.

#Kalpathy Temple
Kalpathy Temple, also known as the Kalpathy Viswanatha Swamy Shrine, is considered as the oldest existing Shiva temple in the Palakkad region. The annual Chariot Festival and a gala event that lasts for seven days attract many to the temple. The shrine was constructed by Kombi Achan, who was the King of Palakkad in 1425. Influenced by the Vedic Tamil Brahmin culture, the temple organises an annual Kalpathy Car Festival. The last three days of the car festival feature decorated temple chariots that are drawn through the streets of Palakkad. The Tamil Brahmin villages, now declared as World Heritage Sites, are frequented by tourists.

#Kanjirapuzha
Kanjirapuzha is a small town near Palakkad and is renowned for the dam that has been constructed across the nearby River Siruvani. The huge reservoir of the dam is a popular picnic spot.

#Kodaikanal Lake
Kodaikanal Lake, a man-made lake, is located in the Kodaikanal city of Dindigul district,
Tamil Nadu. Considered as one of the most popular geographic landmarks and tourist attractions, this lake is located at a distance of 3 km from the bus stand. Perched at an elevation of 2,285 m above sea level, this lake is star shaped. The lake was created in 1863 by Sir Vere Hentry Levinge, who was the collector of Madurai. He came to this place after his retirement and converted this marshy land with several streams of lake.Tourists visiting this artificial lake can take a walk around this lake or can enjoy several activities such as cycle rides and horse rides. In addition, fishing can also be done at this lake; however tourists need to obtain permission from Inspector of Fisheries. Boating can also be enjoyed on this lake, for which boats are provided by Tamil  Nadu Tourist Development Corporation and Kodaikanal Boat & Rowing Club.

# Coaker’s Walk
Coaker’s Walk, discovered in 1872, has been named after Lt. Coaker. Located on the southern slopes of this beautiful hill station, Coaker’s Walk is a paradise for nature lovers. Situated at a distance of 1 km from the lake of Kodaikanal, this place is known for its long winding paths, forests and flowers present.The major attraction of this place is the Telescope House that offers beautiful view of valley and its nearby towns. Tourists visiting this place are required to purchase a ticket for entering Coaker’s Walk. The ideal time to make a visit to Coaker’s Walk is before 2:30 in the afternoon. This is because after 2:30 pm, the mist starts setting all over by the late afternoon.

#Silver Cascade Fall
Silver Cascade Falls, one of the most famous waterfalls, is the first attraction that unfolds to tourist, located on the Madurai – Kodaikanal road, on way to Kodaikanal. This waterfall is the result of excess water in the Kodai Lake, which comes down as a fall. Silver Cascade Falls is located at a distance of around 8 km from Kodaikanal.Considered to be an ideal location for nature lovers, this falls is 180 ft high. Owing to the presence of various minerals in the water of this fall, taking a bath in this fall is refreshing. In addition, this fall also serves as a halting point for vehicles and tourists as there are several shops dotted around, which sell fruits and other forest products.

#Pillar Rock
Pillar Rocks, located at a distance of 8 km from the lake tower, is one of the famous tourist attractions. At this attraction, tourists can see three granite boulders that are standing vertically shoulder to shoulder. Measuring a height of around 400 ft from the ground, these pillars are known for offering bird’s eye view of the surrounding beautiful vistas. The chambers that are between the two pillars are also known as Devil’s Kitchen.

Bryant Park, a botanical garden, is situated on the eastern side of ‘The Lake’. Conceived and landscaped in 1980 by a British Army Officer, Glenn Bryant. The garden also houses a glasshouse, which comprises a wide assortment of flowers, ferns and other ornamental plants.

Berijam Lake, located at a distance of 21 Kilometres from the heart of the city, the lake is one of the most popular attractions of Kodaikanal. This lake was introduced to the public by European settlers. Known for its serene beauty, the area on which the lake is present was originally a swamp, which was cleared so as to discover the lake.Surrounded by green pine population, this lake is the main source for Periyakulam Town, which is located in  proximity to Kodaikanal. Tourists visiting the lake can spot bison and leopard along with chirping birds. This lake can only be visited after obtaining the permission from the District Forest Officer, as it is not open to general public. Berijam Lake is a place where tourists can enjoy plethora of activities such as boating, walking and trekking. Boating is one of the most popular activities that tourists can enjoy at this lake. Water of this lake is abode to several known and unknown species of fish, which makes it angler’s heaven.

Nagarhole National Park, the enchanting 247 square-mile park in Karnataka has an astonishing abundance of wildlife including large mammals such as tiger, leopard, wild elephant, Dhole (Indian wild dog), and Gaur (Indian bison).The park derives its name from the combination of two Kannada words. ‘Naga,’ meaning snake, and ‘hole,’ meaning streams. True to its name, quite a few serpentine streams fork through the rich tropical forests of the park. The landscape is one of gentle slopes and shallow valleys. Dry deciduous forest trees are leafless in the summer rather than in the winter.  The change in terrain throughout the park in refreshing and the river system provides a unique wildlife viewing experience. The park has been recently renamed as Rajiv Gandhi National Park after the late Prime Minister of India. Nagarhole National Park is counted among India’s best wildlife parks due to the large elephant and bison population. It also hosts a variety of animal species along with approximately 250 species of birds. On its northern confines is the Kabini River and on its southern fringes is the Bandipur national park. During the dry season (February till June), this artificial lake attracts a large number of animals, making it an ideal spot for sighting wildlife.

Sree Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the most famous temples in South India.
The huge temple that extends beyond 6 hectares of land is dedicated to god Shiva and it is named after goddess Parvati. The temple was constructed by Kulasekara Pandya. The temple has been mentioned in the songs sung by ancient saint as early as the 7th century. Invasion of Malik Kapur in 1310 resulted in the ancient temple being destroyed. When Hindu kings returned to power, the temple was restored and the present form is a contribution by Nayaks who ruled Madurai between 16th and 18th centuries. The thousand pillar hall is one of the amazing works in the temple that is famous for architectural brilliance. It is the temple’s museum and the statues here are exquisite.

Thirupparankundram gains importance as it is one of the six places chosen by god Murugan as his abode. It is said that this was where Lord Murugan married Devasena. It is also considered as the place where sun and moon abide. This cave temple is dedicated to the element of earth among the five elements and various Tamil classical texts mention this hill as ‘Southern Himalaya’. It might interest you to learn that the hill not only houses Murugan temple but also an Islamic Shrine, which is dedicated to Sekunder. The architecture is amazing.

Gandhi Museum was constructed in memory of Gandhiji after his assassination.
The building, which houses the museum, was constructed around 1670 AD by Nayak Queen Rani. The construction was completed and inaugurated in 1959. The museum houses a Picture Gallery, which presents Gandhiji’s visual biography. The history of Freedom struggle is depicted with 265 illustrations in the Special Exhibition section. The ‘Hall of Relics’ preserves some original and replicas of Gandhi’s personal belongings. Cultural programmes are conducted in the open air theatre here, which can accommodate 8000 people. The library in Gandhi Museum has a vast collection detailing India’s cultural background and books by Gandhiji.

Samanar Hills is situated 10 km away from the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple.
The caves found here were used by Samanar, the Jains. It is believed to belong to 1 AD. The Jain carvings found here are amazing and so are the sculptures. The hill top offers splendid view of Madurai. A natural fountain that is ancient is found here and it is called Pechchi Pallam. It is a great place to spend considerable time in solitude.

Situated on Mahatma Gandhi Road in Ahmedabad, Jumma Masjid is one of the finest architectural specimens found in the city. Also known as Jama Masjid, this mosque was built by Sultan Ahmed Shah in the year 1423 to render the Muslim devotees a place to congregate for Friday prayers. It is believed that this yellow sandstone mosque was built using pieces from the vandalized Hindu and Jain temples. The mosque has 260 pillars that are covered with intricate carvings and the interior of the shrine is illuminated by natural lights that filter through latticework screens.
